New Salem, MA – Two Killed in Crash on Daniel Shays Hwy

New Salem, MA (December 8, 2024) – Two individuals from the Gardner area lost their lives in a three-vehicle collision on Daniel Shays Highway (Route 202) Friday afternoon, as reported by Laurie Loisel, spokesperson for the Northwestern District Attorney's Office.

The victims, an 89-year-old driver and a 74-year-old passenger in one of the vehicles, were pronounced deceased on-site. Several other individuals from the two additional vehicles involved were transported to Athol Hospital for medical care. One of the injured drivers sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester.

Emergency crews from Orange and New Salem fire departments, along with ambulances from Amherst and Athol, responded to the crash. State Police and Massachusetts Department of Transportation officials temporarily shut down a portion of Route 202 between Whitaker and Shutesbury roads starting at around 2 p.m. as the scene was secured and investigated. Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
